Changes Ahead - Blog Relaunch of www.PastExpiry.com

Changes Ahead - Blog Relaunch

Friends, Enemies, and those indifferent,

Today marks the relaunch of my blog "Past Expiry."   The year 2015 marked a low point in updates (29), the lowest since I started this cartoon blog in 2006.  Part of the reason was I was more focused on other things, and uninspired as far as humor goes. 2015 was a very nondescript year.

Another reason for my blog relaunch is to to post things here that I would normally share on Facebook that are not cartoons (mine or others'). Facebook is just plain weird.  I tend to get more feedback and comments from total strangers than people I actually know.  I'll still do facebook updates, but it will be done for me automatically through this blog, which has a much wider audience.

Some of the more obvious changes will be non-cartoon postings.  Each post will be prefaced with a category tag like [MUSIC], [MOVIES], [MISC], [myLIFE], and so on.  I will try to keep the majority of my updates positive.   If you see a category you're not interested in, it will be your cue to ignore it. The key is not to complain about it; learn from Bill in this example:

Comments are moderated, so if you have nothing constructive to say, or are just plain hateful, I will delete your comment, find out where you live, and give you a wedgie.

Regards,
Johnny Ancich

January 7, 2015: Charlie Hebdo magazine attack

Charlie Hebdo magazine attack

Twelve people died and 11 others were injured today in Paris after gunman opened fire at Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris. Notable victims included.

Charlie Hebdo Editor, Cartoonist Stéphane Charbonnier
Charlie Hebdo Cartoonist Georges Wolinski
Charlie Hebdo Cartoonist Jean Cabut

Religion, a mediaeval form of unreason, when combined with modern weaponry becomes a real threat to our freedoms. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today. I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity. ‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.’ Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and, yes, our fearless disrespect. - Salman Rushdie

[LIFE] 46th Birthday

March 25, 2014: Today I'm 46. Yes, it's time for my annual birthday post. Throughout the year I've kept track of which song I will choose to be the official song of my birthday. Something that 'speaks' to me and touches on what has been a year of drudgery. As the years go by, I will eventually have a soundtrack of my life. This year's choice is:

Everyday Is Exactly The Same by Nine Inch Nails

Honorable mention (2nd place) goes to this gem that I literally found in the past week. Describes my experiences with online dating to a tee (minus the pretty girl, minus the sex, minus the wonderful conversation, etc). Sooner Or Later by Mat Kearney

[LIFE] The official song of my apartment fire

Thursday night I went to bed earlier than usual since I've been tired lately. At 1:30AM the building's fire alarm went off, and naturally woke me up. Previous alarms (rare events) have been false alarms or very minor events. I waited for the alarm to go off, but it just kept going and going. Then I smelled something like burnt plastic, so I thought I'd better get up! I rarely see anyone in the hallway, but this time was greeted by what I can only describe as a 70 year old man, wearing nothing but small grey jockey's asking if I thought this might be a real fire. By the way, he had man boobs that I can only describe as strangely 'triangular'.

Well I made my way outside, and saw a heck of a lot of people that I've never seen before. And damn, was it cold. About -16 Celcius, or 3 degree Farenheit for you imperialists. I overheard that someone left something on the stove and that the firemen just needed to get rid of the smoke. I went to the coffee shop across the street, which was fairly full; some poor sod appeared to be the only person on that shift covering the counter and the drive-thru. While finishing my coffee and muffin, everyone spontaneously got up and left. I checked if I farted, but it turned out there was some signal that it was safe to go back into the apartment building.

While I was there I heard a song on the radio that is one of a few new songs I heard this past year that I liked from the first time I heard it. So here it is, the song I christen as the official song of my apartment fire (2013): Metric's Breathing Underwater

[ LIFE ] Cartoon published in Australia

Neat. Late yesterday I received a book in the mail that had come all the way from Australia. My cartoon is on page 19 of the book "Mind Training for Swimming Fast" by Julie Robinson... first time I've been published in a book! I gave the author permission to use my cartoon about 6 months ago while the book was still being written.

[LIFE] 45th Birthday

March 25, 2013: Sake's alive, I'm 45. Yes, it's time for my annual birthday post.

Throughout the year I've kept track of which song I will choose to be the official song of my birthday. Something that 'speaks' to me and touches on what has been an introspective year. As the years go by, I will eventually have a soundtrack of my life. This year's choice is 'Weighty Ghost' by Wintersleep (2007).

Like most songs out there, the song meaning is up to interpretation. It could be about the singer's pet cat for all I know, but the following interpretations make sense to me:

1) He wakes up. He thinks. He realizes that his whole life has been a blur, and he's lost sight of who he is, where he is, and what he wants. He hardly recognizes himself, and he thinks, "How did I get here? Who am I really?" Somewhere deep inside, he's still alive, so he doesn't want the probing hands of others trying to patch him up like he's broken.

2) An awakening. When we are young, we see bright futures... we see beer commercial lives or sitcom lives for ourselves. Potential, and possibilities to infinity and beyond. Life is just about to begin and it's gonna be so AWESOME!

But the future doesn't always work out like we planned, sometimes we have to go through things that kind of suck and it takes a toll on us. We hit the bottom. It hurts. And then we climb back up.

Time passes

And then we wake up one morning and look in the mirror. And we think of those dreams that are gone. And we think of all the struggles and how far we've come. Part of us hurts and part of us is numb. But we are the sum of both parts, and for the first time, we see this.

My interpretation: Shit! I'm 45! Better dust off some of those goals. Enjoy the video.

[Life] 44th birthday

Starting a new tradition. Each birthday I will post a music video for what will be the official song of my birthday; something that 'speaks to me'.

Inaugural video is Honeymoon Suite's Burning in Love. An air-guitar delight. I love the angst. Ironically, the lead singer's first name is Johnnie, but I won't blame him for spelling Johnny wrong. At 3:20 of the video you get to see my name in lights (although, again, it is spelled wrong). Sigh... story of my life.

As a favor to me, feel free to spread the word about Past Expiry cartoon. Send some of the ones you like to your friends (or enemies) using the various share buttons, or even write www.PastExpiry.com on your forehead and leave it there for a few days. Japan Relief : How to help

On March 11th, a 9.0 earthquake - the world’s most powerful recorded in history - struck Japan. This impact triggered a destructive tsunami.

Since then, the coast has been hit by more than 150 aftershocks.

The effects of these disasters have displaced Japanese families from their loved ones. Now many are missing, fires have spread, buildings destroyed, towns wiped out and over millions left without water and electricity.

But even in the wake of disaster, there’s always hope. Your contribution can provide emergency supplies and relief required to help those in need.

Please give.
